Kyra guided the tow truck back onto Interstate 5, still unsettled over her conversation with Rachelle. Randon’s sister had put on a bright face when she left the bedroom with Kyra, had bustled around the kitchen as if everything was right in her world. But Kyra could see the fear chasing Rachelle, just waiting for a chance to cloak her in darkness.

Tom would try to touch her, to put a hand on her shoulder or wrap his arms around her waist. But she seemed to sidestep his caresses, always moving out of his reach. Kyra could see the longing in Tom’s face as he watched his wife, and she grieved for them both.

Randon shifted in the seat beside her, as if trying to get his long legs comfortable in the cramped cab. She debated inwardly over whether she should talk to him about Rachelle. She really was an outsider and had only been asked along because Randon needed her to pick up the car. That she joined him for dinner with his family was incidental.

But Rachelle was hurting, and although she was a virtual stranger, Kyra had to talk to Randon. She glanced at him, his face silhouetted by the setting sun. He must have sensed her looking at him because he turned.

Before she returned to her driving, she saw something in his eyes, something she’d seen earlier that day when she’d emerged from the bedroom with Rachelle. It was a rebellious look, as if she’d challenged him and he was ready to do battle against her. If she hadn’t been so preoccupied with Rachelle, she might have laughed at his pugnacious look. She wanted to ask him about it now, but she was preoccupied with Rachelle’s problems. “Your sister’s a lovely lady,” she said as she glanced in her side view mirror and changed lanes.

He removed his hat, dropping it on the seat between them. “Yeah,” he said softly.

Kyra massaged the steering wheel with her palms, trying to work out what to say. “She seems to be taking the cancer in stride.”

Rubbing at his brow, he closed his eyes against the brilliant setting sun. “I suppose.”

“Actually,” Kyra said, worrying the steering wheel some more, “actually, I’m a little bit worried about her.”

“It’s not your concern,” he snapped. Then she heard him drag in a long breath. “I mean, you don’t need to worry about her. She’s got Tom to take care of her.”

“That’s just it,” Kyra persisted. “I’m really afraid she—”

“Leave it, Kyra.” He raked his hair back, then settled his hat back on his head. “You said your mom died. You never mentioned your dad.”

She saw his change of subject for what it was, a way to avoid talking about his sister. He couldn’t know how painful it was discussing her father.

“He’s still alive.” She hoped Randon wouldn’t press the issue.

“You see him much?” Randon asked.

She shook her head as the old pain roiled within her. Damn, she’d thought she’d put all that behind her. But
